The ranch cowboys of the American
old west, in their days of working
cattle were a part of activities such as cattle drives, cattle
branding, fixing fence and putting up hay.
The authentic cowboy images portrayed today of a real cowboy, show a person wearing western clothing, fancy cowboy gear, singing country music, reciting Cowboy Poetry, driving a Dodge pickup truck and riding in a fancy saddle. I don't recall ever sitting around a chuck wagon or campfire eating sourdough biscuits, beans and grilled steaks, reciting cowboy poetry and strumming a guitar. However, I do have a lot of cowboy memories of driving cattle, roping sick calves, gathering strays, fixing fence, pitching hay and eating fresh Rocky Mountain Oysters roasted on a branding fire. I may never have won any big awards or been a great singer or learned how to yodel, but I sure do have some good stories to tell about life as a ranch cowboy. A horseman and a cowman are two different critters in my book, but combined they have the makings of being darned good cowboys. It all depends on their degree of cow sense. I'd like to share a South Dakota Cowboy's version of that Cow Sense with you. ![]() ( You can request a CD or just down load to your hardrive HERE )FREE I've spent forty nine years gathering the experience for this book. Between its pages lies much of what was passed on to me about cows and horses and working with them.
